MBBS candidates can upgrade colleges until the third round of counseling.

Every year hundreds and thousands of medical aspirants of India go through the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination process with the hope of securing a seat in a medical college of India. While scoring high in NEET is undoubtedly an achievement in itself but it’s just one part of the journey. The next critical phase is counseling which plays an important role in deciding which college a candidate will attend.

A common question that arises among students and parents is — Can I change or upgrade my college after I’ve been allotted a seat? The good news is yes, MBBS candidates can upgrade their college choice until the third round of counseling. This article will walk you through how the process works, what you need to keep in mind, and how to make the most of this opportunity.

Understanding the Counseling Process

The MBBS counseling process in India is typically happens in multiple rounds by both central and state authorities:

  • All India Quota (AIQ) counseling is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).

  • State quota counseling is managed by individual state authorities.

Counseling is generally done in four rounds:

  1. Round 1

  2. Round 2

  3. Mop-Up Round (Round 3)

  4. Stray Vacancy Round

What is College Upgradation?

Upgradation is a process where a candidate who has already been allotted a seat in a previous round is eligible to be considered for a better (higher preference) college or course in the next round which is based on their merit and seat availability.

For example, if you were allotted your third preference college in Round 1, you can still opt to be considered for your first or second choice during Round 2 and Round 3.

Upgrading College Till the Third Round

As per the latest counseling guidelines, candidates can upgrade their allotted college until the third round, which is also known as the Mop-Up Round. Here's how it works:

Round 1: If allotted a seat, you can either accept it or opt for upgradation in the next round. If you choose to upgrade, you must report to the allotted college and confirm your seat while indicating your intent to upgrade.

Round 2: Based on merit and seat availability the student may be allotted a higher preference college. If upgraded, you must report to the new college and If not upgraded, you retain your Round 1 seat.

Round 3 (Mop-Up Round): You are still eligible for upgrade if you have not been allotted your top choice. After this round no further upgradation is allowed and once you accept a seat in the Mop-Up Round, it becomes final.

Important Note: You cannot participate in the Mop-Up Round if you already have a seat in a government college under AIQ after Round 2 unless you forfeit it.

Tips to Make the Most of College Upgradation

  1. Fill Choices Wisely: While registering for counseling kindly ensure you list your preferred colleges in the correct order of priority.

  2. Stay Updated: Keep an eye on official counseling websites for updates on seat allotment and reporting dates.

  3. Don't Miss Reporting: If you don’t report to the college after seat allotment you may lose your chance to participate in the next round.

  4. Consider State Counseling: Along with AIQ, many candidates apply through state counseling to increase their chances of getting a preferred college.

  5. Document Readiness: Keep all your documents ready (NEET scorecard, allotment letter, ID proofs, certificates, etc.) for smooth reporting.

Conclusion

The opportunity to upgrade colleges until the third round of counseling gives MBBS aspirants much-needed flexibility in choosing the best possible institution for their medical education. It's a system that allows students to aim higher without the fear of losing what they’ve already secured. However, this flexibility also comes with responsibility. It’s essential to stay informed, adhere to timelines, and make strategic decisions. Missing deadlines or misunderstanding the rules can result in lost opportunities. So, if you’re an MBBS Abroad aspirant going through the counseling process, make sure you’re well-prepared and proactive. Remember, the journey doesn’t end with getting a seat — it’s about getting the right seat that aligns with your goals and aspirations.
