MBBS Academic Year for 2021 Likely on February 14th, 2022

Huge Updates coming for MBBS Students!

The commencement of MBBS courses for the year 2021 has faced a lot of delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has finally decided to start the academic session for the same from 14th February 2022.

The announcement for the same was made through official notification of the NMC on its official website i.e. https://www.nmc.org.in/MCIRest/open/getDocument?path=/Documents/Public/Portal/LatestNews/20220202023456_merged.pdf

The rules regarding starting of the academic session, as well as the duration of the UG courses, are according to the Graduate Medical Education Regulation (1997). The other details for the same have been covered below.

  1. The 1-month Foundation Course shall not be conducted separately before the course but along with the 1st professional year. Said course shall be conducted on the weekends/holidays or after the teaching hours on weekdays.
  2. The 1st professional a.k.a 1st year has been reduced from thirteen to eleven months.
  3. Vacations during the first 3 years of the program will be reduced by 1 month
  4. The Final professional/final year exam shall take place on June 2026.
  5. Internships shall continue for 1 year and care is also taken to avoid any delays in clinical and practical postings.

The NMC has taken special care that despite the apparent reduction in the course duration, the teaching and training hours won’t be cut in any way. To complete the backlog, the buffer time in the program will be utilized. As mentioned above, this ‘buffer time’ shall include the vacations and the Foundation course period.

Throughout the duration of the course, all the MBBS colleges in India shall will strictly put in place and follow Covid Appropriate Behaviour and other Prevalent Covid Safety Measures Guidelines.
