Indian MBBS Students in China Seek Government Action to Return to China for Studies
Over 23,000 Indian students who have been studying in medical universities in China have requested the Government of India to carry forward talks with the Chinese Government to take steps to return back to China. This will help them complete their MBBS in China.
Why Raise this Issue?
When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in 2020, the Indian students were safely brought back home. Since that day, they have been studying online. It’s what transpired after that has led to the above demands.
It was on February 8th, 2022 when the National Medical Commission (NMC) released a notification stating that degrees through online education shall not be recognized in India. Thus, it “warned” Indian students from pursuing MBBS in China, stating this reason as well as the travel restrictions in China.
No Word on the Return of Indian Medical Students to China
Many students have pointed out that though many Chinese medical universities have started offline classes, no communication has been made as to when the Indian students of those universities are allowed to return.
What has angered some students, even more, is that the process of return has begun for students from other countries.
“Until now, we were told that entry to all in China is restricted due to ‘Zero Covid Policy’ by the Chinese Government. But recently, students from Pakistan, Mongolia among all are communicated about their return. Whereas, there is still no development in case of us Indians.”
Support has also been shown from the NSUI i.e. student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC). In a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs, NSUI State General Secretary Faisal Shaikh has said pointed out that Indian medical students are suffering physically, mentally, and even financially for the past 2 years. Thus, the Indian government needs to coordinate with the Chinese government and kick start their return to China.
What to Expect?
First and foremost, Indian medical students currently pursuing MBBS in abroad in China need not worry about the NMC Notification. Their degrees won’t be considered an “online degree” even if they’ve attended even a single offline class.
As far as the return of Indian students to China is concerned, they shall soon receive a communication, which is evident from the statement of the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Mr. Zhao Lijian,
"I can tell you that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the issue of foreign students returning to China for their studies. We are considering in a coordinated manner the arrangement for allowing foreign students to return to China for their studies. We stand ready to work actively toward the healthy, safe, and orderly cross-border flow of people on the basis of sound anti-epidemic protocols."
